Albert Edelfelt

Early days: Albert Gustaf Aristides Edelfelt was born on  July 21,1854 in Porvoo, Finland.Edelfelt admired the poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg, who was a family friend. The company of Runeberg had a permanent impact on Edelfelt, who frequently turned to scenes from Finnish history in his paintings. He did his studies of art in Antwerp, Paris and Saint Petersburg

Career:

Albert Edelfelt  illustrated Johan Ludvig Runeberg’s epic poem ‘The Tales of Ensign Stal’. Edelfelt was one of the initial Finnish artists to attain international fame. He enjoyed significant success in Paris and was one of the founders of the Realist art movement in Finland.

He influenced many younger Finnish painters and helped fellow Finnish artists such as Akseli Gallen-Kallela make their breakthrough in Paris
