Art Display Space at Lifeworks Chiropractic - October - December

Thursday, August 28, 2008

Art Display Space at Lifeworks Chiropractic,

202 US Route 1, Falmouth, Maine

Show Dates October - December, 2008

Lifeworks Chiropractic proudly presents Diana Johnson, Freeport artist, paints in oil and pastel. As a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, Johnson has won awards for her pastel paintings. Works have been included in New York exhibitions at the National Arts Club and at the Salmagundi Club. She is a recipient of a Good Idea Grant awarded by the Maine Arts Commission and was represented in a recent edition of American Art Collector. Johnson's inspiration comes from places that elicit both a sense of rest and rejuvenation. The more a painting seems to emit energy, as if from the paper or canvas painting itself, the happier she is with the results.

Johnson enjoys encouraging others to explore the visual arts by offering art classes at the University of Southern Maine's Center for Continuing Education and through Freeport Community Education. Her Bachelors degree in Art Education and her Masters degree in Education were both earned at the University of Southern Maine.

Lifeworks Chiropractic is located in the Foreside Place office park and is

open to clients or by appointment by calling Lori Rae at Lollipop Art Productions 207- 415-7143. The space adorns high ceilings and large open space.

Heidi Daub at Aarhus Gallery

Tuesday, August 26, 2008

Aarhus gallery is excited to exhibit the lively color work of the talented Blue Hill artist Heidi Daub September 2-21. The public is invited to an opening reception on Friday September 5th from 5-8pm.

With a personal vivid style and recognizable imagery, Heidi's modernistic landscapes play along the border of abstract art paintings and representational painting.

"I am concerned with ordinary things and the extraordinary ways in which the ordinary shapes our lives. My paintings evolve from an introspection,... an awareness,... There is an aspiration to a holy moment so to speak. How we perceive and feel, the nebulous space between the physical reality of a given situation, person or place, and the perceptions we carry, the curiosity and non-linear ways of looking at time."

Heidi Daub graduated from Montserrat School of Visual Art, has lived and worked in Maine since 1984 and exhibited her paintings widely throughout New England since 1987. Heidi is represented by galleries throughout New England and her work is housed nationally in many private collections.

In 2008, Heidi has inaugurated the Women of Maine Visionary Arts Award to support women involved in audio, visual or literary arts who exhibit outstanding commitment and are inspiring to others.

The work of Aarhusians Kevin Johnson, Mark Kelly, Annadeene Konesni, Richard Mann, Wesley Reddick and Willy Reddick will also be on view.

Remember to come to town, relax and enjoy the evening with the extended gallery hours of the Belfast Friday night Art Walk.

?arhus Gallery is located at 50 Main St. Belfast, and open daily 10am-6pm. For more information and a slideshow of the current exhibit visit www.aarhusgallery.com or call 338-0001.

Painting the Bold Coast exhibit at Bayview Gallery

EXHIBIT: Of Land and Sea: Painting the Bold Coast

An Exhibit of Marine Paintings at our Camden Gallery

Featuring: William R. Beebe, Vern Broe, Robert Spring and Gallery Artists

DATES: 29 August through 27 September 2008

LOCATION: 33 Bayview Street, Camden, Maine 04843, 800-244-4534

CONTACT: Susan Robertson-Starr

800-244-4534

Bayview Gallery presents Of Land and Sea: Painting the Bold Coast - an exhibit of marine paintings in our Camden gallery, featuring the works of William R. Beebe, Vern Broe, Robert Spring and other gallery artists.

Marine artist William Beebe has been oil painting the coast for over 16 years, and he now dedicates himself to rendering the historical wooden schooners of the 19th and 20th centuries. An admirer of Impressionist Claude Monet and Frank W. Benson for their brushwork, palette and interplay of light, Beebe creatively uses layers of various colors to achieve depth in his images. A black hull may have Naples Yellow, Cobalt Blue, or Umber added to create light and dark or warm and cold areas. His crisp lines and detailed renderings bring vitality to his maritime work along with a traditional realism honoring the excitement and joy of the nautical journey. His oils capture movement and place, celebrating the timeless grandeur of these majestic sailing vessels.

Vern Broe has painted the coast from several New England locations - Gloucester, Marblehead, and of course Maine. Versatile marine painter and former draftsman, Broe explores the contrasting qualities of light and dark and their various tones in his oil paintings. Water takes on an illusionary sense due to his skillful, delicate use of multiple washes of acrylic paint. Well-studied, keen lines define his vessels, giving them a subdued character against a receding, dream-like backdrop. He pays homage to the sailing and working crafts that grace the coastline.

Maine resident Robert Spring is well versed in portraying images in both oil and watercolors. Influenced by J.M.W. Turner, his oils are luminous and impressive, exhibiting an inventive palette that plays up the frequently subtle nature of his subject matter. Texture and color create a rhythmic energy, bringing new life to his seascapes. A sculptor as well, Robert's use of thick impasto suggests a tangible quality with his oils, texture and movement working in unison. His watercolors evoke a feeling of mystery, leaving the viewer to draw his own conclusions as to the outcome of the painting. A heightened sense of drama with no resolution contrasts with a momentary stillness and peace.

Terrarium: Karen Gelardi

Tuesday, August 19, 2008

Montserrat College of Art announces Maine-based artist Karen Gelardi as the featured artist for the fifth year of their Emerging Artist series. The initiative invites a promising New England artist to install their first Boston-based solo exhibition in the 301 Gallery.

Curated by Montserrat Gallery's Assistant Curator Shana Dumont, the exhibit, entitled Terrarium, features Gelardi's newest body of work. Mixed media collages of organic foliage that grow from the gallery walls and floors reflect Gelardi's fertile imagination. Says Dumont, "Interestingly, though the botanical forms are stylized, they do not seem distant from nature; rather their hand-made appearance mimics the apparent disorder of an overgrown garden." The artist has staged the gallery to simulate the experience of a terrarium and includes several `ecosystems', naturalistic settings, enclosures and collections. Individual works are displayed within the show for close observation, discovery and classification, emphasizing the `gallery as terrarium' concept.

It is within this organic context that Gelardi explores the use of consumer goods and manufacturing technologies as artistic tools. Applying emerging production technologies, as well as traditional materials and techniques, the artist fashions customized goods that function as artistic materials or sculptural elements. She created Assembly as an experiment that investigates how nature, contemporary consumer culture, and technology overlap. An artist book project where potential art patrons can collaborate in the exhibit content, it consists of a series of three books whose pages are composed of identical black and white drawings of botanical or geometric designs. When participants purchase a book online or in the exhibit, it will be printed 'on demand' and displayed in the exhibit, adding to a growing, colorful stack of books (they will be mailed to their owners when the exhibit ends). The artist uses on-demand manufacturing because the scale of production is perfectly in synch with the demand. However, within the exhibit context, the print-on-demand books are sculptural objects, not functioning as books. The Assembly website: www.karengelardi.typepad.com/assembly.

Andersen Studio Presents the Painterly Paintings of david Dupree

Thursday, August 7, 2008

David Dupree is an original American Folk Artist painting

In a naive style that incorporates pattern, color and drama.

David has a resume that includes truck driving, working on an oilrig, a ranch hand in Wyoming, an oil field mechanic in New Mexico and Texas, a gold miner in Nevada, and a lumber jack in the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State.

David has been living in Maine since 1985 and is currently employed helping people who are overwhelmed by emotional stress.

As with American country music, David's paintings tell stories of American life including working and leisure activities and commentaries on the relationship between nature and culture. At Andersen Studio in East Boothbay several of David's golfing paintings are on view. The sun streams dramatically upon the viewer as a golfer raises his arms in preparation for a swing. David?s oil paintings express a heightened sense of joy and Zen in the every day moments of living. Chop wood and carry water has never been expressed so vividly as they are in the scenes of America found in the painterly paintings of David Dupree.

Other paintings on view on Andersen Studio include farming, ice fishing, bicyclers, and baseball scenes as subject matter

David lives in Waterford, Maine.

Andersen Studio is located at the corner of Route 96 and Andersen Rd, East Boothbay, Maine, across from the Mill Pond

Expanded Soft Pastel Painting Classes with Sally Loughridge

Wednesday, August 6, 2008

South Bristol painter Sally Loughridge will present an expanded schedule of soft pastel classes at the Woodturning School Studio in Damariscotta beginning September 30. There are classes for those new to the medium as well as the more experienced. Loughridge has been teaching soft pastel painting since 2002, first at Round Top and now privately and through the Farnsworth Museum.

Pastel is an inviting, immediate and flexible medium incorporating aspects of drawing and painting. From 9/30 to 10/21 on Tuesday mornings 9 to 12, she will teach "Soft Pastel from the Ground Up - Creating Surfaces and Mixing Media." Guided by demonstration and instruction, students will prepared toned and textured panels and explore a variety of under painting techniques to deepen and enhance painting with soft pastels. There will be ample time for painting each session. Some previous experience with soft pastel painting is recommended.

During these same four weeks on Tuesdays 1 to 4, Loughridge introduces a new class, "The Still Life in Soft Pastel - Volume, Light and Life." The richly hued flowers of fall will be used in conjunction with objects, both crafted and organic. The class will address composition, lighting, perspective, value contrast, color temperature, texture and transparency. We will focus on creating volume, light and atmosphere in our paintings through the distinctive qualities of this medium. Students may paint still life arrangements of their own design. All levels are welcome.

Eight week classes will start on 10/28 and run through 12/16. The Tuesday morning class is "First Strokes - Introductory to Intermediate Soft Pastel Painting." This course provides an opportunity for those new to the medium and continuing pastel painters to explore the use of soft pastel on a variety of surfaces and to learn unique techniques for expressing value, hue, form, temperature and perspective. The weekly format includes demonstration, exercises, tailored individual guidance, lengthy painting time, critique and homework challenges. Repeat students are welcome.

The afternoon eight week class is "Layer and Light - Soft Pastel for the More Experienced Painter." Designed for those practiced in pastel painting who wish to strengthen their work, the class will explore how to create more compelling pastel compositions - harmonious, simplified and expressive. Through demonstration, instruction, exercise and ample time at the easel, students will also enhance their depiction of light and shadow, depth, and mood and improve their ability to identify and address problems. Previous experience with soft pastel painting is necessary.

Loughridge exhibits her work at West Island Gallery, Pemaquid Art Gallery and Archipelago as well as in invitational and individual shows. For more information on the artist, her work and these classes, please visit www.sallyloughridge.com. To receive an email flyer and registration, email her at sloughridge@tidewater.net with "classes" in the subject line.

Janna Civittolo of Cerulean Fine Art Gallery is delighted to be bringing this Portland based painter to Hallowell, "Jan's paintings are like color-enhanced memories of places that many of us have experienced. His palette brings a boldness to the landscape and his forms bring harmony to our eyes."
