 COMMONS ART GALLERY
447 Main Street Norway ME
Opening Reception Friday, November 7, 2008 7-9 PM
"ART MOVES ART"
On Friday, November 7, the Commons Art Collective will host an opening of original and new art, "Art Moves Art," joining in the celebration of twenty years of the Art Moves Dance Project, conceived and lead by dancer Debi Irons.
The art, like Debi Irons herself, promises to be contemporary, experimental, varied, and moving. At the time of this writing, most of it is still in process! For example, the show will include a mobile by Nikki Millonzi of Norway. Harrison poet Lisa Moore plans to write a poem right onto the wall that other artists will embellish and color. Steve Florenz of Norway will offer two surprises: "Surf-n-turf-wear" and "suggested improvements to the turtle." Falmouth painter Judy Schneider is excited to offer something based on nature, seasons, and growth, that is "way out of my usual comfort zone for walls." Anne Bernard of Bridgton is creating "a 3D gestural line wall piece in mixed media painting, including wax." Joanna Reese of Greenwood will contribute sculpture and oil painting. Lee Margolin of Harrison is experimenting with photographs of Debi Irons taken in July in Long Lake. Katey Branch is painting her lyrical dancers directly onto the wall. And there's sure to be more.
The opening is part of a three-venue evening-long gala that will begin with a silent auction at the Art Moves Studio at 13 Cottage Street in Norway. Doors will open at 6:15. The dance troupe will perform at 7. The gala will then move to the Commons, down the street, where this show of art will open.
There will be another short performance at about 8pm to commemorate the many years of collaboration and inspiration among the artists in our community. Then, the celebration will move to Cafe Nomad, across the street, for food and fun.
Tickets for the entire gala are available at Books 'n' Things: $35 per person and $60 per couple (all but $15 is tax deductible). For more information about Art Moves, go to www.artmovesdance.com.
The Commons Art Collective has been making and sharing art in the Oxford Hills since 2001. They have opened over sixty shows of original, contemporary art since they began and currently have over twenty members.
