Angel Botello

Early days:

Angel Botello was born in June 20, 1913 in Galicia,in the northwestern region of Spain. Botello had 5 other siblings. His father Angel Botello Suárez of Puerto Rican decent was  a businessman in the fish canning industry.In the 1920s, he  shifted to Bordeaux, France with his folks and lived there upto 1935.When he stayed in France, Botello's  mother’s desire was that Angel should become a farmer but he instead  wanted to be an architect. Botello graduated with honors at the Fine Arts School of Bordeaux and he also excelled in drawing, painting as well as modeling.

 

Career:

In 1935, Botello returned to Spain where he joined the School of Art of the San Fernando Academy in Madrid. In the same year, Botello’s family traveled to Cuba where they were able to stay for 8 months.Once the family  returned to Santo Domingo, his paintings were noticed by the Peruvian ambassador there who invited Botello to show them in Port-au-Prince, Haiti in 1944.

He later shifted to Mexico in order to meet the Mexican artist Diego Rivera and then he stayed in Haiti.He immediately became very popular.The haitian landscapes  drawn by him is one of  the best and the most popular one. In Haiti, Botello improved  his artistic career of woodworking and he's recognized as the father of the Haitian wood carvings.

Botello was a versatile artist who worked in all creative media that included oil paintings, drawing, printmaking, bronze sculptures, wood carving, photography as well as mosaics.
