ADORATION OF THE SHEPHERDS:
The Adoration of the Shepherds was painted in MESSINA for the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli. Michelangelo Merisi, commonly known as Caravaggio is the artist of this work. His paintings were the turning point of his career because he painted from real life rather than drawings. This made some people to criticize him but later earned the term “ARTISTIC REALISM”. Caravaggio’s first work was to decorate a wall dedicated to Saint Matthew in the Contarelli Chapel in the church of San Luigi dei Francesi.

EXCELLENCE OF THE ADORATION OF THE SHEPHERDS:
The adoration of the shepherds was criticized by The Capuchins and was tagged “vulgar” due to his approach to religious paintings. Caravaggio’s painting became popular for its reality and divine. The picture shows everyone to be very simple with barefoot and a dim light that is enough to see everyone in the barn. It also shows the purity of Christ and the amusement on the three shepherd’s face.

TECHNIQUE
Caravaggio used a technique called chiaroscuro for which he was famous. Chiaroscuro shows the contrast between dark and light. This makes the viewers to concentrate their view on the situation and figures of the paint rather than the background of the paint.
