EARLY DAYS:

Alfons Karpinski was born on April 29th, 1848, in the small town of Ciechanow in Prussia. He was the youngest of five children of silver-miner, Pawel Karpinski, and his wife, Halina, who was a housewife. Karpinski's early years were spent in a rural environment, and he was educated at a local school. He developed a passion for mathematics and science, and when he was fifteen, he enrolled in a technical college in Warsaw.

Karpinski graduated from the college in 1867 with a degree in engineering. He then moved to Berlin, where he worked as an engineer for the Berlin Waterworks. While working in Berlin, Karpinski continued to develop his skills in mathematics, and he wrote several papers on mathematical topics.

In 1871, Karpinski was appointed as a professor of mathematics at the University of Berlin. During this time, he wrote a book on the theory of algebraic equations and continued to publish papers on mathematics. He also organized a series of lectures on mathematics and was appointed as a professor of mathematics at the University of Gdansk in 1876.

Karpinski's work during this period was highly influential, and in 1881, he was elected as a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences. He was also elected to the Royal Society in 1883.

In 1884, Karpinski was appointed as a professor at the University of Krakow, where he held the chair of mathematics. He continued to focus on algebra and number theory and wrote several papers on these topics.

Karpinski's most influential work was in the field of graph theory. In 1891, he wrote a book on the topic, which laid the foundation for modern graph theory. His work also laid the groundwork for the study of topology and set theory.

CAREER:

Karpinski studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and later worked as an art teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan.
