Thomas Cole (1801 - 1848) was an American Romanticist painter and founder of the Hudson River School, an influential American art movement. Cole was born in Bolton-le-Moors, Lancashire, England, to a family of English heritage. In 1818, he immigrated to the United States with his family, settling in Steubenville, Ohio. After some initial struggles, Cole began to make a name for himself as a landscape painter, and by 1825, he was exhibiting his work in New York City. Cole's early works were inspired by the American landscape, and he was particularly drawn to the Hudson River valley. He became known for his romanticized depictions of the American wilderness, featuring strong lines, rich colors, and a romanticized vision of the past. Cole's work often featured a symbolic narrative, exploring the relationship between man and nature. In the 1830s, Cole began to move away from his traditional landscapes and focus on what he called "history paintings," which combined elements of classical and biblical themes. His most famous work, The Course of Empire, was a five-part series that explored the rise and fall of civilizations. It is considered one of the most important works of American history painting.
